'FAMILY DAY AT HARBOURSIDE PARK'
ST. JOHN’S, NL – The daily Occupy NL General Assemblies have voted to promote Saturdays as Family Day. Weather-permitting, each Saturday afternoon the public is invited to come down to Harbourside Park and enjoy face painting, crafts, and music. People are invited to bring “anything fun” to share, such as sidewalk chalk, hula hoops, puppets, instruments, and more. This week costumes are encouraged!
Family Days are meant to highlight the park as a collective space where everyone is welcome, and where the spirit is one of creativity and genuine connection. “We are ‘occupied’ with working together to create conscious community and a fair world,” the event poster reads.
This Saturday, Occupy NL joins in a global call to implement a Financial Transaction Tax - commonly known as the Robin Hood Tax - at the G20 Leaders Summit in France. Even a .05 per cent tax on the trillion-plus dollars being shuffled around daily in the global financial sector (trading stocks, bonds, foreign exchange, derivatives, etc.) would amount to hundreds of billions of dollars collected each year. This money would be used for coordinated action on global & domestic poverty and environmental issues. By discouraging high risk speculation, it is also predicted to further stabilize the global economy. The Canadian government has failed to support this commonsense action in the past. Occupy NL is part of the global Occupy movement, which has spread to more than 80 countries worldwide. Protestors have occupied Harbourside Park and are building a community that embodies the societal values its members feel are eroding under the current economic system. Since its inception on Oct. 15 the community has received support and donations from hundreds of citizens, faith community leaders, the federation of labour, the fisheries union, the City of St. John’s, and countless others. Many say they will occupy the park until they see adequate positive change.
